Preparation and cutting - Now that you've got all the materials together the first thing that needs to be done before any cutting is ironing. It may seem a bit ridiculous at first but you get better more even cuts because the fabric is totally smooth (see the photo on the right). Also only iron on the reverse side of the fabric so it doesn't make the front shiny.
There are two ways you can mark out your pattern on the fabric: using stencils cut from paper or by ruling and marking on the fabric. I did a mixture of the two and I found it worked really well for me. I had a stencil for the frills with a flap that extended it to make the larger frill from fabric 5. I cut them out of newspaper (I didn't have any issues but need to be careful about ink transfer from the newspaper to the fabric) and pinned the stencils to the fabric. Then when I was ready to cut out fabric 2 I used a steel ruler and pencil to mark all the shapes out, this worked because the lovely lady at Spotlight cut all my materials straight and was really good for saving more fabric because all the rectangles shared edges. The prescribed amounts of each fabric is a fair bit extra, I found in most cases an extra 10cm to give you room to get the best cut and to compensate for dodgy cutting but the fabric store.

This took me about 3 hours but could definitely be done quicker without distractions :P And now that I've got everything cut out I'm giving my back a stretch and having some delicious spag bol for dinner.
Where is the pattern?

ReplyDeleteIt's just dimentions. Nothing to print out or anything because they are all geometric shapes.
ok I have made this apron several times and I'm trying to find the instructions again to make a couple more and can't find them on the website or the link given here in the comments,
ReplyDeleteand can't seem to find them anywhere...help?
AHHHHHH! I see what you mean. Looks like Spotlight have removed the link :(
ReplyDeleteLuckily for you and me I still have the paper template that I made the first time around. I even wrote down the dimensions and number of pieces on each bit. Stand-by while I put it together as a list....
Cut 1 x Backing (65cm x 25cm) - frills attach to this.
ReplyDeleteCut 1 x Waste Band (10cm x 65cm) - had to measure this bit off my actual apron and include seam allowance. If the backing is 65cm this length has the be the same. And the finished width of the band is 4cm so 10cm would allow for seams and folding it in half length ways.
Cut 2 x Waste Ties (10cm x 76cm) - 10cm will match the waste band and 76cm is what I measured with seam allowance. But can pretty well make this as long or short as you think it will need.
Cut 2 x Bib Panels (27cm x 25cm)
Cut 2 x Neck Straps (72cm x 6cm)
Cut 4 x Frills (15cm x 110cm)
Cut 1 x Bottom Frill (24cm x 110cm)
I think that's everything. See how you go. Instructions are throughout the 1-10 steps I have provided in other posts. Good luck! Let me know if anything is missing.
